I crochet things together whenever at all possible and even that drives me a little crazy. :( <br />I think doing the sleeves in the round would be ideal. She had taken a class from Sarah Peasley who teaches a method of picking up stitches around the armhole and then knitting the sleeve cap with short rows so that the sleeve still fit as well as set in sleeves. I love the method and I think it is worth not being able to do them 2-at-a-time.
